Elnet Foundation strives to serve the neglected and forgotten segments of society, that other actors may not have intervened in much in the past. One such group are the working equines of our capital city of Ethiopia.
Equines serving Addis Ababa city communities through performing different activities play a great role in city’s daily activities and for their owner’s livelihood. Gharry and cart-pulling horses and donkeys are used to transport people and all kinds of goods, including farm products, firewood, water, construction materials (stones, sand, and wood), etc.
Many of these animals demonstrate severe animal welfare issues and low body scores, protracted or incurable disease, injury, or incapacity associated with abandonment or unintended neglect compared with rural equines.
At Elnet Foundation we’re starting to see the fruits of our animal welfare project, with our Mobile Veterinary Clinic, which is serving equines – horses, donkeys and mules – and their owners in Addis Ababa through treatment and euthanasia services. This alleviates the severe pain and suffering of abandoned equines which are too sick to be treated, and it ensures the livelihood of equine owners can continue as their working animal gets high quality veterinary treatment.
This project is jointly funded by Elnet Group through Elnet Foundation and by Brooke Ethiopia
